WINDSURFING IN AUSTRIA
Experience the fresh breath of surfing in Austria where mountains and forests give an exciting vibrancy to the character of its landscape. Known as the “winter sports capital” of Europe, it also forms a neutral core of Europe together with Switzerland. Glaciers, meadows, gently rolling farmlands, vineyards, river gorges, alpine villages, wooded foothills and semiarid steeped, this is a breath-taking landlocked country of South-Central Europe with approximately three hundred lakes and plenty of rivers, an exciting environment for water sports fans and lovers, surfers, wind and kite surfers.
Austria can be accessed by air, land and sea. Although you’ll miss most of the stunning landscape with its snow-covered mountain tips, it is quite easy to travel in and within by plane. Riding the hearts of Austria’s waves can give you a rare opportunity to enjoy its rich distinctive and delicious local food with traditional hearty meat and dumpling varieties.
Weather and Winds
Austria has a wetter Western region with high rainfall and drier eastern regions with less rainfall. A strong Northerly wind blows in most afternoons and makes perfect windsurfing condition that highlights the country as a great destination for all sorts of water sports. It has a summer season that lasts from early June to mid-September. A winter that comes leaving everywhere in snow lasts from December to March while March’s cool breeze rolls in spring and October, autumn.
Best Seasons
The best time to visit Austria is dependent on what you want to do. Christmas and New Year’s Eve, late January to late March are also perfect for skiing. The summer months, May to September is perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, windsurfing and other sports. Enjoy Austria’s summer, pick your boards and sails and blaze the trail in the waves.

The Amazing Lake Achensee
Many villages dotted along its shores, offers water enthusiasts a huge area to express their water skills in excellent wind condition and feel the wind which makes it a number one surfing destination.
Lake Neusiedlersee
Located in the East is this wonderful lake with strong and good wind for surfing. The shallow water makes it easy for beginners and advanced riders. Every year the wind surfing world cup takes place in Podersdorf.
The Shore of Lake Wolfgansee
St. Wolfgang, an old attractive town along the shore of this magnificent lake, known as the mecca of outdoor activities from hiking to windsurfing, you just name it, is a heart-warming lure to pilgrims and visitors.
Lake Reschensee
This alpine lake has several wind surfing schools around it and excellent thermal conditions due to its position in the main Alpine bridge.
Lake Walchsee
If you are a beginner, then Walchsee is ideal for you. It is a small and perfectly formed lake.
Silz
“Crazy Eddy’ is the name given to this 15 metres wide rider wave on the Inn River near Silz. Wild pleasure seekers can ride the wildest ride if the year which occurs in spring when the Inn is full of melted water pouring from the mountain and the water level is raised.
